about

In a world that emphasizes a 24/7 grind, how do we balance working hard to achieve our dreams with taking the time to enjoy the simple things in life? I wrote "Burn the Candle" to reflect on my feelings and struggles as a 9-5 employee and a 5-9 musician. This song's anthemic, power pop-punk chorus delivered by Justin Demers is contrasted with eerie, haunting guitars and vocal melodies in the verses.

lyrics

Awake before the sun comes overhead
Vision squinting, eyes fall closed while driving dead
And late at night I light another fire
To feel alive for just a little while
It's within reach
The thing you seek
But you can't see it so it slips right through your open hands
Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame
Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame

They’re taking what you wanted
You’re faking what you wanted, oh oh oh
You didn’t know what you wanted all along
We want to fix the game and win
Can’t pick my favorite of the seven sins
I’m burning my candle down until it’s smoke

Losing track of days as lights grow dim
And my mind is liquid spilling from the brim
It’s hard to find the spark to light a fire
When you’re sick of searching out for something higher
Fragments of dreams
Some common themes
But you can’t see them so they slip right through your open hands
Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame
Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame

They’re taking what you wanted
You’re faking what you wanted, oh oh oh
Didn’t know what you wanted ever and all along
We want to fix the game and win
Can’t pick my favorite of the seven sins
I’m burning my candle down until it’s smoke

Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame
Burn the candle at both ends, there's twice the flame

They’re taking what you wanted (they’re taking it away)
And you’re faking what you wanted, oh oh oh
You didn’t know what you wanted all along
We want to fix the game and win (game and win)
Can’t pick my favorite of the seven sins
Burning my candle until it’s smoke
